Rating the Arsenal team so far this season; Midfield

Arsenal have not had the season the had planned for, going into the season, there was cause for much optimism after a relatively positive summer transfer window. The season was winding down to a close before the interruption.
We take a look at the player ratings so far, we rated the attack in a previous article, we will look at the midfield here.
It'd be a tricky question to confidently answer if you were asked who Arsenal's best midfielder has been this term, with all of them experiencing dips at some point.

Granit Xhaka-7.0

It was a difficult task here picking who Arsenal's best midfielder has been this season, but Granit Xhaka was ultimately the way to go. Granit Xhaka has had a very mixed season, from some solid performances at the start to the debacle with the fans. He's however come up strong to still put in good shifts in the Arsenal midfield. Picking him as the best here perhaps shows how poor the others have been more than it shows how good Xhaka has been, and a 7.0 rating seems quite generous.

Mesut Ozil-6.0

Mesut Ozil did not start the season in good vein, with then manager, Unai Emry, clearly not a fan of the German playmaker, he only made a handful of appearances until the Spaniard was ultimately shown the door. Mesut Ozil, clearly keen to prove his former gaffer wrong, put in some solid performances and has been decent since then but probably still not up to the level you'd expect of him, but he's been putting in great shifts.

Lucas Torreira-6.0

Lucas Torreira has not since been the beast he started his Arsenal career as, however he clearly brings a difference when on the pitch and he's been key in some matches this season, with his no-nonsense style something Arsenal usually misses in his absence. Injuries haven't done him any favours though.

Dani Ceballos-5.0

After that exhilarating performance against Burnley on match day two of the season, Arsenal thought they had found an answer to the departed Santi Carzola. Ceballos put in an all encompassing midfield performance on the day but has since not replicated such form, with his two(2) assists that day the only assists he has till date. There's surely plenty of talent in there but just as much work to be done.

Matteo Guendouzi-5.0

How do you rate a player who really hasn't played? Matteo Guendouzi really had himself a breakout year last season, with plenty of appearances under his belt and with solid performances too. This season though, he has found the going tough, with game time difficult to come by, especially since Mikel Arteta took over. He has however been decent, to say the least, when given the chance.

Joe Willock-5.0

As pointed out in a previous article, Joe Willock isn't really as bad as he's made to look. Willock has had limited game time and has put in commendable shifts. People seem to get carried away with the performances of the likes of Saka and Martinelli in tandem with Willock's all the while forgetting that the midfield position is far more demanding than the attacking positions where mistakes go unnoticed because they are many times unpunished directly unlike the midfield.

The Arsenal midfield has really underwhelmed this season with little to nothing offered going forward and only very minimal defensive contributions. This ratings are perhaps generous and a bit sentimental.
